Accompanying yourself

For me personally, being a beginner at playing piano, I sometimes have difficulty with singing and playing at the same time. Once I get better at playing piano, I think it will be easier to read music and sing along at the same time. But for now, when I'm learning to play a song I prefer to play it on the piano first and then learn to sing it before putting it all together. If you're an amateur at playing a new instrument like I am, I think it's easiest to learn songs this way before you can become skilled at playing them together. But once you do accomplish this, you'll be able to improve your singing skills by having an instrument to sing along to.
