A career in music Empty A career in music

Post  Julia Genovese Fri Mar 30, 2012 12:29 am

In reality I considered the idea of me having a career in music as impossible because I am average and not exemplary in music. I have always been preoccupied with money and making sure I would have a job that would provide for a family in the future. Recently the school has been pushing us sophomores into looking into our future. Just the other day I went onto this website in the computer lab that took me through a course of surveys. The point of the questions was to pin point my personality and recommend jobs that would suit me in the future. After completing the whole questionnaire the results were very surprising to me. It recommended jobs such as music teacher, music theory teacher, sculptor, fashion designer, etc. I would have never considered any of these jobs before this survey. I glad I took the questionnaire because it really got me thinking that maybe money does not matter. I have been singing since I was a little girl and I have always had a passion for it. Even if I never do end up perusing a music career it would still be amazing if I could maintain a\element of music in my life. I would be so upset if my music career was limited to a high school experience. I owe it to myself to keep music a strong part of my life. Teenagers today think they are not going to amount to anything unless they are a surgeon or a lawyer but why not just do what you love and make a living perusing your passion. I am nowhere close to knowing where I will be in ten years but it was a good wake up call to see that music isn’t so far out of my grasp and if I truly wanted I could further my education and live a life full of teaching other people to love music. I now understand that money cannot buy happiness and if that’s all I look for when choosing a career, I will never be truly happy.

A career in music Empty Career in Music

Careers in music are entirely unrealistic. It is hard, demanding and extraordinarily competitive. If you are passionate however, it would be stupid not to try. People always tell me that I need a back up for musical theatre and honestly, I know that I do... I know that how competitive musical theatre is and I know that even if I am good there is always someone better. I do however know that I love theatre more than anything else in the world... should I not go after it because it is unrealistic? I think that people should chase their dreams no matter what. Next year I am going to school for musical theatre and I fully expect to get my butt kicked, but I am SO excited to go and work as hard as I possibly can. I think having a career in music or in theatre is seriously difficult, but I would so much rather live my life passionately than live it with regrets. Everybody should go for what they want. The worst thing that could possibly happen is that you don't get it.
