What is Music? Why do you sing?

“What is music?” I think a question that follows this question is “Why do you sing?”
A couple of weeks ago I was asked this question. We all put a lot of time and effort into singing, but I had never really taken the time to think about why I do it- singing was just always there. But after thinking about it for a while I realized for me, music is an escape. When I am singing I am happy; I’m not thinking about the amount of homework I have or the stress and drama that comes with high school, I am simply enjoying what I am singing. Music has become such a great way for me to unwind and relax and just live in the moment. I rely on music to get me through the day and I can’t imagine not having singing and music in my life. So why do I sing? The best way I can put it is in an analogy. You know how a clock has hundreds of different parts just to make it tick? Well singing is like one of those parts, it makes me tick; it’s what makes me, me. I probably won’t ever become famous for singing and it probably won’t ever be anything besides a passion of mine, but that is enough because it makes me happy.
