Music as a Reflection of the Human Experience
Could music be a superior form of human expression than the perhaps more utilitarian human speech? Often thrown about are the phrases, “Music is how I express myself” or “My music describes who I am”. We experience an approximation of our existence in the form of perception limited by the thresholds of our senses. Down to the very core of our perceptive abilities, literally our brain, we can hold this to be true. As an innate associative nature might relate the death of a loved one with perhaps the wilting of a flower in to a category of ‘sad’, so might it include a specifically tuned melody; the singer utilizing the expressiveness of his or her voice to carry a purposefully tension-filled melody, with patterns of notes as familiar as the actual feelings themselves. Perhaps melody is simply an afterthought, and tonal language is just an accurate and reliable way of expressing specific sentiments that represent essential components of the human experience auxiliary to speech.
