Memento Mori
Before doing the Memento Mori winter concert this year I usually only occasionally questioned the relationship between the text of the music and the music behind it. One piece that made me think during the Memento Mori was the movement Quae moerebat et dolebat, movement number four. When we first started learning about the piece and learning the movement I believed that this was a happy song. The beat and tunes in the movement are bouncy and, to me, happy sounding. Later when we went over the meaning of the text I realized that this was not the case at all. The song is about the mother weeping on the ground for her son who was hung on the cross. The song is trying to express the agony and suffering of the mother, however the tune sounds the opposite. I still do not fully understand why that is but in my opinion the text and the music do not go to together in that movement.
