Life has Loveliness to Sell
Life has Loveliness to Sell has become one of my favorite pieces that we will be performing in the Major Works concert. Although it is not sung in Latin with the intricate and strikingly beautiful chords of the Memento Mori work, the song fits with the concert with its message. The song’s simplicity in terms of the notes, emphasizes the text of the poem, the lyrics of the song. The lyrics create a message that life brings goodness, basically saying live your life to the fullest. Ironically the author of the poem commits suicide herself. This proves encompasses another side to death. Although not natural as many people hope for, this type of death is caused by a mental disease. Just as people die of cancer, others feel the need to take their own lives due to a certain internal illness. Knowing this, the song takes on an even deeper meaning. Even though the author had a seemingly positive outlook on life, she in turn took her own.
